Now keep it safe: three things
  1. Keep your photos and files unedited. The receipt only matches the originals. Put them in an album such as “My records”.
  2. Save this receipt to your camera roll.

Keep the receipt file too. The image is a handy copy; checking needs the file.

  3. Email it to yourself.Email it to myself

Your mail app opens a draft. Attach your receipt image and receipt file. Don’t attach your photos or documents. Timevolt does not send it or know whether it was sent.

How to keep notes that hold up

Write notes as soon as you can. Keep the original account rather than replacing it later; the venue decides what weight it gets.

      1. Write it down straight away, on paper or in the box on a step.
      2. Put the date, time and place at the top, and who you spoke to.
      3. Use their words where you can; separate what you saw from what you were told.
      4. Sign or initial a paper note, photograph it and add the photo.
      5. Never edit an old note. Add a new dated entry when something changes. A device save time is not independent time evidence or proof of event order.

Keep an inventory from collection day

A hirer said belongings were left in a van when it was taken back. The collection report, signed auction check and same-day call notes supported an empty van. The ombudsman rejected the complaint on what was more likely.

Reasons for ending the hire agreement were outside this decision. A probability finding, not certainty about every item.

Record belongings before the car moves on

A lender sent a repossessed car to auction without a list of what was inside. The ombudsman said a record should have been made even without the keys. It partly upheld the complaint and ordered compensation for the failings.

Several service issues were considered together. The decision did not establish whether all claimed items were later collected.

      Proves / Doesn’t prove

      Proves

A completed time receipt shows that the exact selected file existed by the independently witnessed time. You can check whether a later copy has the same bytes. It does not establish creation time, authorship, identity, event order, location or the truth of the contents.

      Doesn’t prove

It does not prove who took the photos, that they were taken during the tow or at the stated repossession time, that the list is complete or accurate, that the repossession was lawful, or who wins a dispute.

A file date cannot establish lawful repossession, a complete property list or condition at the event.

These are the bounds of a completed proof. The local tester does not establish any time. The chosen court, scheme or regulator decides what to accept.

      Questions, answered plainly.

Your file stays on your device. During normal receipt creation, your device sends a randomized code made from its fingerprint, plus encrypted recovery data. It doesn't send the plain fingerprint or the random value that opens the code. Keep the original file and the complete receipt for checking. Privacy Policy.

Can the repo company keep my belongings that were in the car?

Your rights to recover personal belongings depend on state law. Contact the lender or recovery company promptly and check your state’s rules. The FTC says lenders usually cannot keep or sell personal items found in a repossessed car until a period set by your state has passed, and some states require them to tell you what was found and how to get it back. Check your state rules or your attorney general.

Can they charge me a fee to get my things back?

Practice varies. In one federal appeal a recovery company demanded an inventory and storage fee; the court rejected the debt collection claim on narrow grounds and left state claims open. Ask your state attorney general or legal aid before paying or refusing.

What should I photograph if my car is about to be repossessed or already was?

Photograph all four sides, each corner, wheels, windshield, interior, trunk, odometer and dashboard, then each belonging inside before moving it. Write a list with item, place in the car and what you removed. Do it before the car is moved again.

      Context for this answer
Can a repossession be unlawful even if I missed payments?

Yes. Under the UCC a secured party may repossess without court process only if it does so without a breach of the peace. Whether a specific tow met that rule is for a court or regulator to decide.

      Context for this answer
Can a lender be liable for belongings its agent took even if the repossession was lawful?

Courts have let such claims go forward. In a 1998 federal case the court refused to dismiss a conversion claim over belongings left in a repossessed car. Outcomes depend on state law and on evidence of what was in the car.

Why does a list of what I lost need proof?

You usually must show what the property was and what it was worth. In one appeal a damages award was cut back because value and repair cost were not proven.

Does a time receipt prove the repossession was illegal or the damage was done at the tow?
