Timevolt Terms of Service
Effective 30 October 2026. Last updated 30 October 2026.
1. Who we are
Timevolt is run by Tabberstein, LLC, a California limited liability company ("Timevolt", "we", "us"). Our address is 830 S Olive Street #310, Los Angeles, CA 90014. You can reach us at support@timevolt.com.
These terms cover the Timevolt website, apps, receipts, templates and API (together, "the Service").
2. Agreeing to these terms
You agree to these terms when you make your first time receipt, save a template, create an account or buy something. Next to each of those buttons we show a short line: pressing it means you agree to these terms and our Privacy Policy, and the Bitcoin record is permanent. We keep a record of the notice you saw, which version of the terms it linked to, and when you pressed the button. If you don't agree, please don't use the Service.
If you use the Service for a company or other organisation, you agree for that organisation. You confirm you are allowed to do so. In that case "you" means the organisation.
Some products have extra terms, such as the API terms in section 12 or an Enterprise order form. If those conflict with these terms, the extra terms win for that product.
3. Who can use Timevolt
You must be at least 13 years old (or 16, where local law requires it) to make free receipts. You must be 18 or older to create an account, buy anything or use the API. A parent or guardian can do these for a younger person. The parent or guardian is then the account holder, agrees to these terms and operates the account. Children under 13 don't use accounts themselves. Under-18s can't hold accounts, buy anything or use the API.
You can't use the Service if the law where you are forbids it, if you are on a US government sanctions list, or if you are in a country or region under comprehensive US sanctions.
4. Your account
You can make a time receipt without an account. Some features need one, such as the Pass, saved history and the API.
If you make an account:
- give us accurate details and keep them current
- keep your password and recovery codes safe, and don't share your account
- tell us quickly at support@timevolt.com if you think someone else has used it
You are responsible for what happens under your account and your API keys.
5. What a time receipt is, and what it isn't
How it works. When you make a time receipt:
- Your device computes a fingerprint (a SHA-256 hash) of your file. Your file stays on your device. We never receive it.
- Your device sends us only a randomised code (a commitment) made from that fingerprint. We send that code, or a summary of many such codes, to one or more independent timestamp authorities. They follow a public standard (RFC 3161). When we have checked that an authority's signed response is valid and matches your receipt, your receipt shows Dated.
- We group fingerprints together and record a summary of them in the Bitcoin blockchain. When that reaches our confirmation threshold, your receipt shows Permanent.
What "Permanent" means. Permanent means the summary has reached six confirmations in the Bitcoin blockchain under our published confirmation policy, as of the last check shown on your receipt. Your receipt shows the authority's time, the Bitcoin block time and when we last checked as separate lines. Bitcoin can, rarely, reorganise recent blocks; if that affects your receipt, we show it. Permanent doesn't guarantee that any technology will last forever.
What it proves. A time receipt is evidence that a file with exactly the same bytes existed at the latest by the time shown. It doesn't show when the file was first made. Bitcoin block times are approximate, so the timestamp authority's time is the more precise one.
What it does not prove. A time receipt does not prove:
- who made, owns or sent the file
- where the file was made
- that what the file shows is true, complete or unedited before you fingerprinted it
- that anyone else received or read it
- that you will win any claim, dispute or application
Courts and other bodies decide for themselves. Whether a court, tribunal, insurer, landlord, employer, school or agency accepts a receipt is up to them. We don't promise that any of them will.
It only matches the original. If your file changes by even one byte, it will no longer match its receipt. This includes resizing, re-saving, editing, compressing or re-exporting it. Keep the original file exactly as it was.
Not a qualified timestamp. Unless your receipt says so, it is not a qualified electronic timestamp under EU or UK eIDAS rules. Qualified timestamps carry special legal weight in those places.
It works without us. Once your receipt shows Permanent and you have saved its file, anyone can check it with our free reader and public Bitcoin data. They don't need a Timevolt account or our permission. It is designed to keep working even if Timevolt stops operating. The reader checks the saved evidence on your own device, without contacting us. Checking that the Bitcoin record is still part of the main chain today needs an optional online check (see our Privacy Policy). The reader is published under the Apache License 2.0, and the receipt format at timevolt.com/receipt-format.
6. We are not your lawyer
Timevolt is not a law firm, accountant, financial adviser or notary. We don't give legal, tax, financial or insurance advice. Using the Service doesn't create a lawyer–client or any other professional relationship.
A time receipt is not notarisation. It doesn't verify anyone's identity, and it isn't a sworn statement.
Rules differ between countries, states and situations, and they change. If something important depends on it, such as a deposit, a job, a claim, a deadline or a court case, talk to a qualified professional where you live.
7. Templates, checklists and guides
Our templates, checklists, step lists and guides are general information to help you get organised. We take them from public official sources where we can, and we link to those sources.
- They may not fit your situation or the law where you live. They may be out of date.
- You decide whether to use them and what to change. Read anything before you sign or send it.
- Deadlines we show are reminders only. Always check the real deadline with the official source or a professional. A reminder we fail to send doesn't change any deadline.
- You may copy and use our templates for your own personal or business paperwork. You may not resell or republish them as your own templates. This applies to the parts we wrote; official government forms stay under their own terms. Templates are provided free, for your use, without any warranty.
8. Real case stories
Some pages tell short stories about real public decisions by courts, tribunals, ombudsmen and regulators. Each one links to its public source.
- They are simplified summaries for general information. The full decision is what counts. Read it if it matters to you.
- We leave out the names of private individuals.
- A past result doesn't predict yours. Each case turns on its own facts and the law where it was decided.
- We don't claim a time receipt would have changed the result in any of these cases.
Each story shows the date we summarised it. If you think a summary is wrong or could identify you, email support@timevolt.com. We'll review it promptly and correct or remove it where needed.
9. Your files and content
Your files stay yours. We never receive the files you fingerprint, only randomised codes made from their fingerprints, unless you choose to send us a file yourself (for example, attached to a support email). You keep all rights in your files and notes.
What we do store. To issue and keep your receipt, we store:
- a randomised code made from your file's fingerprint (never the fingerprint itself)
- the timestamp authority responses
- the Bitcoin proof data
- any labels you choose to include in the receipt
If you use "email it to me", your device opens your own email app or share sheet with the receipt image and receipt file attached, where your device supports that. Otherwise it downloads both files for you to attach yourself. We don't send that email, receive a copy, or know whether it was sent. A filled-in template is saved to your device and never emailed. Our Privacy Policy explains what we keep and for how long.
Fingerprints are kept private. During normal receipt creation, your device sends us a randomised code made from your file's fingerprint, plus encrypted recovery data. It doesn't send the fingerprint or the random value that open the code. If you choose to send us a complete receipt (for example, attached to a support email), that receipt can reveal them to us. Timestamp authorities receive that randomised code or a summary of many of them. Bitcoin holds only a combined summary of many fingerprints. We offer no way to look up whether a fingerprint has been stamped. Anyone you give both your receipt and your file to can check that the two match. A fingerprint can't be reversed into your file. Every receipt includes a random value, so the public record is different for each receipt, and someone who only has your file can't use our service to find your receipt. But a fingerprint isn't encryption. Anyone who has your receipt can test guesses about a short or predictable file, for example a filled-in template where only a name or amount changes. In normal use Timevolt doesn't receive the plain fingerprint or the random value, so it can't. Share receipts with that in mind. Don't put anything private in a receipt label you might share. Labels are shown with your receipt but aren't timestamped themselves unless the receipt says so. Notes you write are fingerprinted like files; their text stays on your device.
Timevolt doesn't back up your original files. You must keep your own copies. We can't recover a file we never had, and a file can't be rebuilt from its fingerprint.
- Keep your original files, unedited, somewhere safe.
- Save your receipt file. The receipt image is a handy copy, but checking a receipt needs the receipt file, so keep both.
If you lose the original file, the receipt can no longer show anything about it. We are not responsible for files or receipts you lose, delete, change, or keep only in a browser or device that is later cleared or lost. If you use the Pass's encrypted backup, section 13 explains what it covers and what we owe you if it fails.
The same file twice. If you fingerprint the same file again, you get a separate new receipt for the new time. We don't tell you or anyone else whether that file was fingerprinted before. Each receipt stands on its own.
Permission to process. You give us permission to store, copy, send and process your fingerprints, receipt data and anything else you send us. We use it only to run and secure the Service, to improve it using aggregated data that doesn't identify you, and as these terms and our Privacy Policy allow. Data written to Bitcoin can't be removed by anyone, including us.
10. Services we depend on
Timevolt relies on independent services we don't control. These include timestamp authorities, the Bitcoin network, hosting and storage providers, email delivery and payment processors.
- They may be slow, unavailable or change their terms. A receipt may stay at Dated longer than usual while we wait.
- Bitcoin fees and confirmation times change, and Bitcoin can occasionally reorganise recent blocks. If an anchor is affected, we re-anchor where we can and show the receipt's true status. We only show Permanent after we have checked the Bitcoin confirmation. If we find a status was shown by mistake, we correct it. You'll see the correction when you next open the receipt in the Timevolt app or website, and we email you if we have your address. A saved receipt checked offline in the reader can't show corrections made later.
- A timestamp authority's certificate can expire or be withdrawn. Where possible we use more than one authority, and we keep the evidence you need to check older receipts. While we operate, we aim to add fresh timestamps before the methods or certificates behind older receipts age out. We can't guarantee this.
Before you make a receipt, we list the timestamp authorities we use and the parts of their published policies that matter to you. Those policies govern how their timestamps can be relied on technically; they don't add terms between you and us. We aren't responsible for failures by these services, except where our own choices or handling caused or worsened the problem. But we will tell you honestly what state your receipt is in.
11. Fair use: what you can't do
Don't use the Service to:
- break any law, or help someone else break one
- use a receipt to deceive anyone, for example to pass off a fake or altered document as genuine, or to present a receipt as proof of something it doesn't prove (see section 5). Keeping a fake, forged or threatening document as evidence of what someone else did is allowed
- harass, stalk, threaten or harm anyone, or collect evidence about someone in a way the law forbids
- use the Service to possess, share or promote material that sexually exploits children, or to promote terrorism or violence. Recording a threat you received, to report it or keep evidence, is allowed, but it doesn't make unlawful possession lawful. If we become aware of it, we will report it as the law requires.
- put other people's private information in receipt labels or notes without a right to do so
- break, overload or get around the security or limits of the Service (to report a security issue, email security@timevolt.com; good-faith research within our published rules is welcome), scrape it at volume, or use our content to train a competing product
- copy, resell or white-label the Service itself without a written agreement with us. Offering receipts inside your own product through our API is allowed under section 12
- pretend to be Timevolt, or say Timevolt approves, certifies or endorses you or your documents
We may suspend or remove access, and refuse to issue receipts, if we reasonably believe these rules are being broken. If we remove something or restrict your account, we'll tell you what we did and why, unless the law or someone's safety prevents it. You can ask us to review the decision at support@timevolt.com. You can also report illegal content to that address. Receipts already anchored in Bitcoin can't be erased by anyone, but we may stop hosting or showing them.
12. API and agents
If you use the Timevolt API, including through an AI agent or automation you control:
- Keys. Keep your API keys secret. You're responsible for all use of your keys, including by your agents, apps and staff.
- Usage and billing. We bill each receipt that completes. Failed or cancelled jobs aren't billed, and retrying the same request with the same request key never creates a second charge. You pay the published per-receipt price (currently 1¢), or the price in your order form. Usage is billed monthly in arrears. Tell us about a disputed charge within 60 days. You may set spending limits, and we may require them.
- Limits. We set rate limits and fair-use limits. We may slow or pause traffic that threatens the Service or other customers. Where we can, we'll tell you first.
- Changes. We may change the API. We'll give at least 90 days' notice before removing a stable version, unless a security or legal reason forces a faster change.
- Your customers. If you offer receipts to your own users, you must give them accurate information about what a receipt proves (section 5). You are responsible to them for your product.
API access is by invitation only until our separate API Terms and Data Processing Agreement are published. Each business accepts those through an authorised business sign-up before using the API, and they take priority over this section for API use.
13. Plans, payments and renewals
Prices. We show the price, and any tax, before you pay. Current prices are on our pricing page. We only charge prices you agreed to, at the rates shown when you agreed.
Fast. Fast is a one-off payment to anchor your receipt in Bitcoin sooner. We show a quote before you pay. Fast doesn't change your receipt's time. What you buy is priority broadcast: Fast books your receipt into a Bitcoin transaction that we broadcast by the deadline shown at checkout. It then usually reaches Permanent within a few hours, but Bitcoin mining times vary and we don't guarantee when. If the price we'd quote you would be above $2.99, we pause Fast and don't sell it at that moment. We place a hold on your card and only take the payment if, by the settlement deadline shown in your order (before the card hold expires), we have broadcast on time and your receipt shows Dated with valid evidence you can download. Otherwise we release the hold, and we never take payment for an unfinished item just because the hold is expiring. The Fast service is fully performed when we broadcast on time; after that, we still deliver the Bitcoin proof to your receipt when it confirms, at no extra cost. If we miss the broadcast deadline, you aren't charged, and your receipt continues on the free schedule.
Printable time receipt. Also called the time receipt certificate. This is a one-off payment of $4.99 (or included in, or discounted with, the Pass and Pass Plus, as described below) for a printable PDF and signed bundle for a receipt that is already Permanent. Your device creates the PDF, so it doesn't send us the values that open your receipt, and we only take payment once your device has created and checked it. The bundle's signatures authenticate the stated commitment and evidence. They don't sign every byte of the PDF or certify labels you add, and the reader reports which displayed facts it checked against the evidence. Your purchase doesn't depend on having or renewing the Pass. It doesn't make the receipt stronger, prove who you are, or guarantee acceptance by anyone.
The Pass (subscription). The Pass costs $4.99 a month, plus any tax. As listed on the pricing page when you subscribe, it includes up to 500 receipts a month (free use: 5), saved history with an encrypted backup across your devices, deadline reminders, journey folders that keep one tenancy, job or claim together, and 1 printable time receipt a month. Your allowance resets on each billing date; free use resets on the 1st of each month (UTC). At your limit, we tell you before you make another receipt, and we don't accept more until your allowance resets. You can still save your work on your device, but it has no independent date until a receipt is made, and that receipt shows the later time. We never charge extra without asking. Fast is charged separately. The encrypted backup covers your receipts, notes, worksheet entries, checklist progress, links and journey folders, encrypted on your device; without your key, we can't restore it, and resetting your password doesn't recover the key. If the backup fails because of our mistake, we'll restore it from our copies where we can and refund that month; other losses are covered by section 19. The 90-day download period starts when your paid Pass access ends. Cancelling stops renewal but doesn't start that period before the end of the time you paid for. If a payment fails, we retry for up to 14 days and your Pass stays active meanwhile; if it isn't resolved, paid access ends then. If you pay again or reactivate before deletion, we cancel the deletion scheduled because paid access ended; that doesn't cancel a separate request to delete your backup or close your account. During the download period, your existing backup stays available but new notes and edits don't sync. Receipts accepted before paid access ended continue processing, and their final evidence stays retrievable, without a new subscription, by opening the receipt file in the Timevolt app or website for as long as we keep receipt proof data (Privacy Policy section 7). Turning backup off stops syncing; it doesn't delete the stored backup. Use "Delete backup" for that. Stopping renewal doesn't cancel a renewal charge already due; withdrawal and refunds follow section 14. We show the scheduled deletion date in your account. Closing your account or asking us to delete your backup follows the deletion rules in our Privacy Policy.
Pass Plus (subscription). Pass Plus costs $19.99 a month, plus any tax. It includes everything in the Pass and 10 printable time receipts a month instead of 1. Everything this section says about the Pass also applies to Pass Plus, except the price and the number of included printable receipts.
Included and extra printable receipts. Included printable receipts reset on each billing date and don't carry over. After you've used them, extra printable receipts cost $1.99 each on the Pass and $0.99 each on Pass Plus, instead of $4.99. We show the price on the preview before you confirm, and add extras to your next monthly bill. You can add up to 20 extras in a billing month. Downloading the same printable receipt again is free.
- It renews automatically each month and is charged to your payment method until you cancel.
- Before you subscribe, we show the price, how often you'll be charged and how to cancel. You tick a separate box to agree to the automatic renewal. After you subscribe, we email you a confirmation that includes this.
- You can cancel online at any time in your account settings, in one simple step. Cancelling stops future charges. Your Pass keeps working until the end of the period you've paid for. If you can't get into your account, use the cancel link in any renewal email, or email support@timevolt.com from the address you subscribed with. We keep a record of what you agreed to when you subscribed.
- We'll tell you between 7 and 30 days before any price change, and 3–21 days before any free trial turns into a paid plan. Once a year we also remind you that your Pass renews and how to cancel. You can cancel before the change takes effect.
- These renewal terms are shown next to the box you tick to agree, and are repeated in your confirmation email.
Payments. Our payment processor (currently Stripe) handles card payments. We don't store your full card number. If a payment fails, the Pass retry period above applies first; for other products, we may pause the affected paid feature until it is resolved.
Free use has limits. Free receipts are subject to fair-use limits that we publish and may change. "Free" never means "unlimited".
14. Refunds
- If we charge you for something we didn't deliver, or a receipt is faulty because of our mistake, we'll refund it.
- If you ask within 14 days of a Pass renewal, we'll refund that renewal, once in any 12 months, whatever you've used. Refunding a renewal ends your Pass at that point, and your backup stays downloadable for 90 days; we tell you this before you confirm. This is our own goodwill policy, in addition to your legal rights.
- Fast and printable receipts start as soon as you order them. Once delivered, they generally can't be refunded, unless they were faulty or the law gives you a right to a refund.
- EU and UK consumers have a 14-day right to cancel, and at checkout we ask you separately to confirm what applies to each product. The Pass is an ongoing service: if you asked it to start right away and cancel within 14 days, you pay only for the part already provided. Fast is a service that is fully performed when we broadcast on time: if you asked it to start right away and acknowledged that you'd lose the right to cancel, you can't cancel once it's complete. A printable receipt is digital content: you lose the right to cancel once its download starts, if you consented and acknowledged that. If you withdraw from the Pass or Pass Plus after downloading printable receipts included in it, we deduct $4.99 for each one downloaded, never more than you paid; we tell you this before your first download. Your rights if something is faulty always remain. Stopping renewal ends future charges; withdrawing from a purchase is a separate right where the law provides it. During the withdrawal period, use the "Withdraw from this purchase" button in your account or in your purchase confirmation email, or send us a clear notice. We confirm your withdrawal by email straight away, with the time we received it, and explain any lawful charge for service already supplied.
- Nothing in these terms takes away consumer rights you have by law.
To ask for a refund, email support@timevolt.com.
15. Enterprise
Enterprise plans (from $250 a month) are governed by a signed order form or agreement. That agreement can set out service levels, data handling, invoicing and other terms. Where it conflicts with these terms, it wins.
16. Changes to the Service
We may add, change or remove features. We make significant changes to a paid feature at your next renewal, with notice, so you can cancel first, unless a security or legal reason requires a faster change. If so, we'll tell you and refund the unused part if you no longer want the feature. Changes never remove your ability to download receipts and backups you already have, or shorten periods we've already promised. Where the law requires your express agreement to a change, we'll ask for it.
If we ever stop offering the Service:
- we'll give at least 90 days' notice where we can
- we'll keep a way for you to download your receipts during that time
Receipts that are already Permanent can still be checked without us (section 5).
17. Our content and name
The Service, our software, designs, the Timevolt mark and our written content belong to us or our licensors. These terms give you a non-exclusive, non-transferable right to use the Service, including for business use, as they allow. You may share your receipts and the reader freely. The free reader is published under the Apache License 2.0.
If you send us ideas or feedback, we may use them without paying you or owing you anything.
18. Disclaimers
We work hard to make Timevolt accurate and reliable. But to the extent the law allows, the Service is provided "as is" and "as available".
We don't promise that:
- the Service will always be available, fast or error-free
- any court, agency or person will accept a receipt
- templates, guides, deadlines or case stories are complete, current or right for you
To the extent the law allows, we disclaim all implied warranties. These include merchantability, fitness for a particular purpose and non-infringement. Some places don't allow these disclaimers, so some of this may not apply to you.
19. Limits on our liability
To the extent the law allows:
- We aren't liable for indirect, incidental, special, consequential or punitive losses. These include lost profits and lost business, even if we were told they were possible.
- Our total liability for all claims about the Service is limited to the greater of (a) what you paid us in the 12 months before the claim arose, or (b) US$100.
These limits don't apply where the law doesn't allow them. That includes liability for fraud, wilful injury, breaking the law, or death or personal injury caused by negligence (California Civil Code §1668). If our error causes a receipt to be bound to the wrong submission, causes its evidence or what we display about it to be incorrect, or means a promised evidence package isn't provided, we'll correct it where we can and refund the affected charge. These remedies are in addition to your legal rights. For other losses from that error, the exclusions and the cap in this section still apply, to the extent the law allows. Nothing in these terms limits our liability for gross negligence, fraud, wilful misconduct, or anything else the law doesn't allow us to limit. If you are a consumer in the UK, EU or Australia, nothing here limits your legal right to a service provided with reasonable care and skill. Consumers may have rights that these terms can't limit. New Jersey residents: sections 18 to 20 apply only as far as New Jersey law allows, and nothing in them limits any right you have under New Jersey law. Nothing in these terms waives your rights under the California Consumers Legal Remedies Act.
20. If you cause a claim against us
If you use the Service for a business, you agree to defend and compensate us against third-party claims arising from:
- your misuse of the Service
- your material breach of these terms
- false or misleading statements you make about what a receipt proves. This covers only the part of a claim caused by you. We'll tell you promptly about any claim, let you control the defence with our cooperation, and won't agree a settlement that binds you without your consent. In turn, you won't settle in a way that admits fault for us, restricts our service or places duties on us without our consent.
This section applies only to business users, never to consumers.
21. Ending use
You can stop using the Service at any time, and close your account in settings.
We may suspend or close your account if:
- you seriously or repeatedly break these terms
- the law requires it
- your use creates a real risk to others or to the Service
Where we reasonably can, we'll tell you why and give you a chance to fix it. We'll also give you time to download your receipts.
Sections that by their nature should continue after your use ends will continue, including sections 5, 6, 7, 9, 14, 17, 18, 19, 20 and 22.
22. Disputes
Talk to us first. Most problems can be fixed quickly. Email support@timevolt.com and give us 30 days to try to resolve it. This doesn't stop either of us asking a court for urgent orders, or starting a claim to protect a deadline. To the extent the law allows, neither of us will argue that a claim against the other was brought too late because of those 30 days. This doesn't pause deadlines in any other dispute you have, for example with a landlord or employer.
Governing law. California law governs these terms, without regard to its conflict-of-law rules. If you are a consumer living elsewhere, you keep any protections your local law gives you.
Where disputes are heard. Disputes are heard in court, not arbitration.
Disputes go to the state or federal courts in Los Angeles County, California. Either of us may use small claims court where the claim qualifies.
Consumers outside the US. If you are a consumer and the law where you live gives you the right to bring a claim in your local courts or to rely on your local law (for example, in the EU or UK), you keep that right.
23. Changes to these terms
We may update these terms. If a change is significant, we'll tell you at least 30 days before it takes effect, by email or in the Service. The date at the top shows the latest version, and we keep earlier versions available.
If you keep using the Service after a change takes effect, you accept the new terms. If you don't agree, stop using the Service and cancel any subscription. Downloading or checking receipts already issued, retrieving your existing data, or using your legal rights does not by itself mean you accept amended terms. Where required, we get your agreement to new terms separately. The terms you agreed to before continue to govern existing obligations, subject to mandatory law. Changes don't apply to disputes that started before them. A change to section 22 doesn't apply to claims you knew about before the change, and you can reject that change by emailing us within 30 days.
24. Other legal points
- These terms, together with the Privacy Policy and any order form, are the whole agreement between you and us about the Service.
- If a court finds part of these terms unenforceable, the rest still applies.
- If we don't enforce a term straight away, we haven't waived it.
- You can't transfer these terms without our consent. We may transfer them as part of a merger, sale or reorganisation, and we'll tell you if we do.
- We aren't responsible for delays caused by events beyond our reasonable control.
- Notices to you may be sent by email or shown in the Service.
