Keep the completed copy and its source records. A time receipt dates those exact bytes; it does not establish that an entry is true or accepted. Save a new copy after each pickup or return set.

How to keep notes that hold up

Write notes as soon as you can. Keep the original account rather than replacing it later; the venue decides what weight it gets.

            1. Write it down straight away, on paper or in the box on a step.
            2. Put the date, time and place at the top, and who you spoke to.
            3. Use their words where you can; separate what you saw from what you were told.
            4. Sign or initial a paper note, photograph it and add the photo.
            5. Never edit an old note. Add a new dated entry when something changes. A device save time is not independent time evidence or proof of event order.

Have renters check existing car damage

Officials claimed a car hire firm used unfair damage checks and charges. The firm agreed to let renters check cars, sign old damage records and get notice of new damage. The deal included payments and a private dispute process for some complaints; the claims were not proved at trial.

The regulator’s release reports allegations and an agreed order, not findings after a trial.

Keep the real dates on repair bills

A report described claims that a hire firm changed repair bills and charged renters for old windscreen damage. In a court approved deal, the firm accepted a fine and agreed to stop. It had to refund charges unless it proved the damage happened during each hire.

The linked source is a news report of a court-approved settlement.

FTC consumer article on renting a car

The article covers liability for damage if you decline the collision waiver, and says to report problems to the company, the FTC or your state attorney general. It says nothing about photographing or documenting the car's condition. Its only digital-data advice concerns personal data on the infotainment system (delete paired devices), not records of vehicle condition.

            Proves / Doesn’t prove

            Proves

A completed time receipt shows that the exact selected file existed by the independently witnessed time. You can check whether a later copy has the same bytes. It does not establish creation time, authorship, identity, event order, location or the truth of the contents.

            Doesn’t prove

It does not prove who took the photos, where the car was, that the damage shown was or was not already there, or who wins a damage dispute.

This cannot establish where or when a scene was photographed, pre-existing damage or who should pay.

These are the bounds of a completed proof. The local tester does not establish any time. The chosen court, scheme or regulator decides what to accept.

            Questions, answered plainly.

Your file stays on your device. During normal receipt creation, your device sends a randomized code made from its fingerprint, plus encrypted recovery data. It doesn't send the plain fingerprint or the random value that opens the code. Keep the original file and the complete receipt for checking. Privacy Policy.

Do I need photos if the rental agent already marked damage on the diagram?

Yes, still take them. The diagram is the firm's record and is often coarse, with no copy for you. Your own dated photos fill in what the diagram leaves out.

What should I photograph at pickup?

Take all four sides and corners, each wheel and rim, the windscreen and other glass, the roof, the bumpers, the interior seats and boot, the odometer, the fuel gauge and the paperwork. Add a short video walk-around with the car's plate in frame, and shoot in daylight or under a torch.

Does a time receipt prove the damage was already there?

A completed time receipt shows that the exact selected file existed by the independently witnessed time. You can check whether a later copy has the same bytes. It does not establish creation time, authorship, identity, event order, location or the truth of the contents.

Are my photos uploaded to Timevolt?

Your file stays on your device. During normal receipt creation, your device sends a randomized code made from its fingerprint, plus encrypted recovery data. It doesn't send the plain fingerprint or the random value that opens the code. Keep the original file and the complete receipt for checking.

Why not just rely on the photo's date and time metadata?

Metadata is easy to change or lose when files are edited, exported or re-saved. A receipt from an independent timestamp authority gives a date that does not depend on your phone's clock.

What if the rental firm says the damage happened on my rental?

Ask for their check-out and check-in records and photos, send your own dated pickup and return photos, and use the firm's complaints process. If that fails, see your card issuer, insurer or state attorney general. The FTC suggests contacting the company's customer service, the FTC or your state attorney general.

            Context for this answer
Should I also photograph the car when I return it?

Yes. Keep return photos taken in the lot, including the fuel gauge and odometer, alongside the company’s return record. The receipt dates those files; it does not independently verify when or where the scene was photographed. The dispute is often about what happened between your return and the firm's inspection.

Do I have to buy the rental firm's damage waiver?

Without a collision damage waiver or other coverage you may be responsible for damage to the rental, according to the FTC. Check your own car insurance and card benefits before you pick up.
