Now keep it safe: three things
  1. Keep your photos and files unedited. The receipt only matches the originals. Put them in an album such as “My records”.
  2. Save this receipt to your camera roll.

Keep the receipt file too. The image is a handy copy; checking needs the file.

  3. Email it to yourself.Email it to myself

Your mail app opens a draft. Attach your receipt image and receipt file. Don’t attach your photos or documents. Timevolt does not send it or know whether it was sent.

How to keep notes that hold up

Write notes as soon as you can. Keep the original account rather than replacing it later; the venue decides what weight it gets.

        1. Write it down straight away, on paper or in the box on a step.
        2. Put the date, time and place at the top, and who you spoke to.
        3. Use their words where you can; separate what you saw from what you were told.
        4. Sign or initial a paper note, photograph it and add the photo.
        5. Never edit an old note. Add a new dated entry when something changes. A device save time is not independent time evidence or proof of event order.

Keep receipts when paying cash at banks

A customer said a partner paid a card bill in cash, but the bank had no record. The receipt was gone, and the customer gave different dates. The ombudsman could not be sure the payment was made and rejected the complaint.

Keep the receipt for each cash payment

A borrower said they paid cash after an earlier cheque payment was canceled. There was no receipt or bank record, and promised phone records were not sent. The ombudsman rejected the complaint because the proof did not show the payment was likely made.

Confirm which payment will close the account

A customer said a payment cleared the card debt, but had no proof she had asked for the closing figure. Both sides accepted the ombudsman's plan. The bank would close the debt, stop chasing it and remove later poor payment records.

The 2017 Committee Note treats identical hash values as reliable evidence that a copy is an exact duplicate. The rules are about authenticity; a time receipt would still need certification and does not decide weight or admissibility of the underlying record.

        Proves / Doesn’t prove

        Proves

A completed time receipt shows that the exact selected file existed by the independently witnessed time. You can check whether a later copy has the same bytes. It does not establish creation time, authorship, identity, event order, location or the truth of the contents.

        Doesn’t prove

It does not prove the payment was made, cleared or reached the right account, who made the files, or that a screenshot is genuine; the payee, bank or court still decides what it accepts.

The receipt cannot establish that money moved, cleared or reached the correct account. A saved screenshot can be false.

These are the bounds of a completed proof. The local tester does not establish any time. The chosen court, scheme or regulator decides what to accept.

        Questions, answered plainly.

Your file stays on your device. During normal receipt creation, your device sends a randomized code made from its fingerprint, plus encrypted recovery data. It doesn't send the plain fingerprint or the random value that opens the code. Keep the original file and the complete receipt for checking. Privacy Policy.

Is a screenshot of my payment confirmation enough proof?

Often it is a start but not the strongest. Screenshots are easy to edit, so back them up with a bank statement line, the payee reference and any messages about the payment. A time receipt shows your file existed unchanged by a date, which shows that the selected file existed by the witnessed time.

Will a time receipt prove I paid?

No. It proves these exact files existed by the date on the receipt. It does not show the money left your account, arrived at the right account, or that the screenshot is genuine. Bank and payee records provide separate evidence of those events.

What should I keep to prove a payment later?

The confirmation or receipt, the invoice, the payee name and account or reference, the matching bank statement line, and any messages about it. Do not throw away a paying-in slip: in one Financial Ombudsman case the customer did, and the complaint failed.

What if the bank or the other side says they have no record of my payment?

Ombudsmen decide on the balance of probabilities, weighing your evidence against the bank's records. Receipts, statements, consistent dates and a clear trail help; a missing receipt or changing dates hurt.

Does a landlord have to give me a receipt for rent?

It depends where you live. In New York, a landlord must give a written receipt for cash or any payment other than a personal check, and for a personal check if you ask in writing. Check your local rules.

Will a court accept a time receipt?

That is up to the court or body. US federal rules let a hash value help authenticate an exact copy of an electronic record when a qualified person certifies it. Other places are silent. A time receipt supports your evidence; it does not decide a case.

I paid the wrong account. Can a time receipt help?

It cannot fix that, but keeping the confirmation with the recipient details and reference matters: one rent platform case traced a missing payment to money sent to the wrong account ID.
