A taxpayer gave no calculation of crypto gains, so the IRS rebuilt them from exchange records. The taxpayer later agreed those figures were right but fought the tax on fairness grounds. The court rejected that defense.
Official Tax Court opinion checked: docket 18582-21, entry 28 (T.C. Memo. 2023-91). Gain figures were agreed before trial, not decided in a cost-basis fight.

The IRS names what records must show; FAQ 40 requires the date and time each unit was acquired and disposed of, but says nothing about how those are verified or whether a third-party timestamp counts. Without documentation of the donor's basis, basis is zero (FAQ 32).

A completed time receipt shows that the exact selected file existed by the independently witnessed time. You can check whether a later copy has the same bytes. It does not establish creation time, authorship, identity, event order, location or the truth of the contents.
It does not prove the transactions happened, that the figures or cost basis are correct, who owns the wallet, or that a tax authority will accept the file.
This cannot establish transactions, ownership, cost basis, correct tax figures or filing.
These are the bounds of a completed proof. The local tester does not establish any time. The chosen court, scheme or regulator decides what to accept.
