Now keep it safe: three things
  1. Keep your photos and files unedited. The receipt only matches the originals. Put them in an album such as “My records”.
  2. Save this receipt to your camera roll.

Keep the receipt file too. The image is a handy copy; checking needs the file.

  3. Email it to yourself.Email it to myself

Your mail app opens a draft. Attach your receipt image and receipt file. Don’t attach your photos or documents. Timevolt does not send it or know whether it was sent.

Your record, one step at a time.

How to keep notes that hold up

Write notes as soon as you can. Keep the original account rather than replacing it later; the venue decides what weight it gets.

        1. Write it down straight away, on paper or in the box on a step.
        2. Put the date, time and place at the top, and who you spoke to.
        3. Use their words where you can; separate what you saw from what you were told.
        4. Sign or initial a paper note, photograph it and add the photo.
        5. Never edit an old note. Add a new dated entry when something changes. A device save time is not independent time evidence or proof of event order.

The NFIP Standard Flood Insurance Policy generally requires a signed, sworn proof of loss within 60 days after loss, subject to FEMA waivers or extensions. Check your actual policy and the applicable disaster notices; this is not a rule for every flood policy.

US federal, Fifth Circuit · 2016

Send the signed loss form with photos

A homeowner used photos, lists and witness accounts to claim flood loss to home contents. The required signed and sworn loss form for those contents was missing. The appeal court set aside the award.

Silent · US federal (NFIP flood policy)

Standard Flood Insurance Policy, 44 CFR Part 61 Appendix A(1), as quoted in a Fifth Circuit opinion

Within 60 days after the loss, send a signed and sworn proof of loss with the date and time of loss, how it happened, repair estimates, and an inventory of damaged personal property. You may not sue unless you complied with all policy requirements.

The policy asks for a sworn statement and an inventory. It says nothing about timestamps or digital file integrity. A dated record supports the statement but does not replace it.

        Proves / Doesn’t prove

        Proves

A completed time receipt shows that the exact selected file existed by the independently witnessed time. You can check whether a later copy has the same bytes. It does not establish creation time, authorship, identity, event order, location or the truth of the contents.

        Doesn’t prove

It does not show who took the photos, where or when the damage happened, that the storm caused it, or that an insurer will pay.

This cannot establish the cause, event time, location, coverage or a claim outcome.

These are the bounds of a completed proof. The local tester does not establish any time. The chosen court, scheme or regulator decides what to accept.

        Questions, answered plainly.

Your file stays on your device. During normal receipt creation, your device sends a randomized code made from its fingerprint, plus encrypted recovery data. It doesn't send the plain fingerprint or the random value that opens the code. Keep the original file and the complete receipt for checking. Privacy Policy.

        Will my insurer accept it?

Unknown for any given insurer. Adjusters and courts decide what evidence they accept. The receipt is one more dated record, not a guarantee.

Does it prove the storm caused the damage?

No. It shows only that these exact files existed by the receipt time. Cause is for the adjuster, engineer or court. One reported dispute turned on whether damage came from a hurricane or from old wear.

What if I edit or crop a photo later?

An edited file has a different fingerprint and will not match the receipt. Keep the originals untouched and receipt those.

Can I get a receipt for photos I took last week?

Yes, but the receipt dates when you submit them, not when they were taken. Receipt photos as soon as you can after the storm.

        What should I photograph first?

Wide shots of each room and the outside, then close-ups of each damaged item, before cleanup or repairs. Also keep receipts for emergency repairs. This is general guidance; check your policy and insurer for specifics.
