Now keep it safe: three things
  1. Keep your photos and files unedited. The receipt only matches the originals. Put them in an album such as “My records”.
  2. Save this receipt to your camera roll.

Keep the receipt file too. The image is a handy copy; checking needs the file.

  3. Email it to yourself.Email it to myself

Your mail app opens a draft. Attach your receipt image and receipt file. Don’t attach your photos or documents. Timevolt does not send it or know whether it was sent.

How to keep notes that hold up

Write notes as soon as you can. Keep the original account rather than replacing it later; the venue decides what weight it gets.

          1. Write it down straight away, on paper or in the box on a step.
          2. Put the date, time and place at the top, and who you spoke to.
          3. Use their words where you can; separate what you saw from what you were told.
          4. Sign or initial a paper note, photograph it and add the photo.
          5. Never edit an old note. Add a new dated entry when something changes. A device save time is not independent time evidence or proof of event order.

Real cases where dated records mattered. We don’t claim a time receipt would have changed the result.

Keep purchase records and answer loss questions

An owner claimed stolen jewels but gave few receipts and photos. The insurer also sought money records, which the owner would not give. The appeal court kept the insurer's win because that refusal harmed its review.

A disputed theft claim may still need trial

A tenant sought payment for stolen jewellery, but the insurer questioned the claim and its supporting records. The court let the claim for payment go forward. It threw out the claims for unfair treatment and extra punishment.

Federal trial decision; payment was still disputed, with no final award reported.

Old appraisals may not show value at theft

A theft jury used an old appraisal to value stolen jewellery and silverware. The appeal court required proof of value at the time of theft and ordered a new trial. It rejected the claim that the insurer had acted unfairly.

A record dispute can need a full trial

An insurer said a jewellery and art theft claim lacked the required records. The appeal court set aside the insurer's win before trial. A trial had to decide whether the owner had met the record duties closely enough.

Photos do not replace all requested loss records

Owners claimed stolen goods and gave photos, receipts and manuals. The insurer still sought more facts to check ownership and the loss. The court ruled for the insurer because the owners had not given the requested help and records.

Insurer claims process under a homeowner policy

The insurer may reasonably require the insured to provide records and documents pertinent to the loss, and the policy is void if the insured intentionally conceals or misrepresents a material fact.

The insurer asked for receipts, photographs, appraisals or other documentation. The court did not say whether a dated or digital record would count.

          Proves / Doesn’t prove

          Proves

A completed time receipt shows that the exact selected file existed by the independently witnessed time. You can check whether a later copy has the same bytes. It does not establish creation time, authorship, identity, event order, location or the truth of the contents.

          Doesn’t prove

It does not prove you own the item, that the item in the photo is the item in the appraisal, who took the photo, what the item was worth, or that an insurer must accept it.

A date cannot establish ownership, value, identity of an item or an insurer’s acceptance.

These are the bounds of a completed proof. The local tester does not establish any time. The chosen court, scheme or regulator decides what to accept.

          Questions, answered plainly.

Your file stays on your device. During normal receipt creation, your device sends a randomized code made from its fingerprint, plus encrypted recovery data. It doesn't send the plain fingerprint or the random value that opens the code. Keep the original file and the complete receipt for checking. Privacy Policy.

Do I need a time receipt if I already have photos and an appraisal?

A completed time receipt shows that the exact selected file existed by the independently witnessed time. You can check whether a later copy has the same bytes. It does not establish creation time, authorship, identity, event order, location or the truth of the contents. Keep original source records, native entry history and separate process evidence; a time receipt does not continuously monitor the file.

          Will my insurer accept it?

Insurers set their own rules and we found none that mention time receipts. The policy wording we read asks for inventories, receipts and documents and is silent on timestamps. Ask your insurer or agent.

What happens if I lose the original photo or edit it?

The receipt only matches the exact bytes you dated. Edit, resize or re-save the file and the fingerprint changes. Keep the original and a copy.

What should I include in a valuables record?

For each piece: clear photos from several sides, close-ups of marks and serial numbers, the appraisal, the purchase receipt or a note on how you got it (gift, inheritance), and the date. Courts have looked for receipts, photographs and appraisals when claims were disputed.

          Context for this answer
Does an old appraisal still show what an item is worth now?

Not by itself. One court held a claimant had to prove value at the time of the theft, not the appraised value from when the item was first insured. Appraisals can go out of date, so add new ones and date them.

What if I have no receipt, for example for a gift or heirloom?

A time receipt cannot create a receipt. Add what you do have: photos, an appraisal, and a signed note from the giver. A court once gave little weight to unsworn letters from relatives, so a sworn statement may count for more.

          Can I add files later?

Yes. Each new batch gets its own time receipt with its own date, so the record builds up over time.

The file tester runs on your device. It does not issue a timestamp or take a payment.
