Now keep it safe: three things
  1. Keep your photos and files unedited. The receipt only matches the originals. Put them in an album such as “My records”.
  2. Save this receipt to your camera roll.

Keep the receipt file too. The image is a handy copy; checking needs the file.

  3. Email it to yourself.Email it to myself

Your mail app opens a draft. Attach your receipt image and receipt file. Don’t attach your photos or documents. Timevolt does not send it or know whether it was sent.

How to keep notes that hold up

Write notes as soon as you can. Keep the original account rather than replacing it later; the venue decides what weight it gets.

              1. Write it down straight away, on paper or in the box on a step.
              2. Put the date, time and place at the top, and who you spoke to.
              3. Use their words where you can; separate what you saw from what you were told.
              4. Sign or initial a paper note, photograph it and add the photo.
              5. Never edit an old note. Add a new dated entry when something changes. A device save time is not independent time evidence or proof of event order.

Use start and end records that match

A landlord sought payment for damage but lacked sound start-and-end records. The deposit reviewer allowed only a small sum for items the tenant admitted. The tenant owed nothing for the rest.

              Based on a tenancy-deposit scheme’s case study.

Later garden growth may reduce damage charges

Dated photos showed a rental garden had grown worse. The landlord got less than claimed because some growth could have happened after the tenants left.

Both sides had only photos from after the tenants left, and the image dates were lost. With no move-in report, the panel could not blame the tenants for the damage. It ordered the deposit returned.

A completed time receipt shows that the exact selected file existed by the independently witnessed time. You can check whether a later copy has the same bytes. It does not establish creation time, authorship, identity, event order, location or the truth of the contents.

              Doesn’t prove

Who took the photos, where, that they show the unit truthfully or that damage was already there, or that a landlord, deposit scheme or court will accept them.

This does not replace a signed check-in report or delivery to the landlord. Edits and compression change the fingerprint.

These are the bounds of a completed proof. The local tester does not establish any time. The chosen court, scheme or regulator decides what to accept.

              Questions, answered plainly.

Your file stays on your device. During normal receipt creation, your device sends a randomized code made from its fingerprint, plus encrypted recovery data. It doesn't send the plain fingerprint or the random value that opens the code. Keep the original file and the complete receipt for checking. Privacy Policy.

Will my landlord or the deposit scheme accept it?

We can't promise that. Deposit schemes and courts decide what evidence they accept. UK scheme guidance says photos should be dated and timely and should back up a written check-in report, so a dated record helps but is not a replacement for it.

Does it prove the damage was already there?

No. It proves the files existed by a time. Show the damage clearly in the photos, add a note of where it is, and get the receipt the same day you take them.

Why not just rely on my phone's date?

The date on a photo comes from your phone's clock and can be changed or lost when files are edited or sent. A time receipt comes from an independent authority, so the date does not depend on your phone.

Should I still send photos to my landlord or sign a checklist?

Yes. Landlords and adjudicators put a lot of weight on a signed check-in report that both sides have seen. Send the photos and report the same day, and keep your time receipt as an extra record.
