Now keep it safe: three things
  1. Keep your photos and files unedited. The receipt only matches the originals. Put them in an album such as “My records”.
  2. Save this receipt to your camera roll.

Keep the receipt file too. The image is a handy copy; checking needs the file.

  3. Email it to yourself.Email it to myself

Your mail app opens a draft. Attach your receipt image and receipt file. Don’t attach your photos or documents. Timevolt does not send it or know whether it was sent.

How to keep notes that hold up

Write notes as soon as you can. Keep the original account rather than replacing it later; the venue decides what weight it gets.

      1. Write it down straight away, on paper or in the box on a step.
      2. Put the date, time and place at the top, and who you spoke to.
      3. Use their words where you can; separate what you saw from what you were told.
      4. Sign or initial a paper note, photograph it and add the photo.
      5. Never edit an old note. Add a new dated entry when something changes. A device save time is not independent time evidence or proof of event order.

Tell readers when a group photo was changed

A paper removed a crew member from a group photo without telling readers. The press panel found the photo misleading. It accepted the paper's offer to explain the change.

Based on a press report of the regulator’s ruling.

Keep news photos before editing them

A news agency pulled a photo with thick black smoke added by an edit. It found a second changed image. It then removed all photos from that photographer from its files.

The linked source is a news report of the agency’s action, rather than a court or regulator decision.

      World Press Photo contest

Verification process (2025 contest): entrants must supply the file as recorded by the camera (RAW, or full-format JPEG in a series of at least seven frames); failure eliminates the entry.

A time receipt does not replace the camera-original file; it can only date it. Rules cover the 2025 contest and may change yearly.

      Federal Rules of Evidence 902(14)

Data copied from an electronic device or file is self-authenticating if authenticated by a process of digital identification; the committee note says this is ordinarily a hash value, certified by a qualified person.

Supports hash matching of a copy to its original, with certification and notice. Does not speak to RFC 3161 dating or to who made the photo.

Press Complaints Commission Editors' Code (accuracy clause 1), as applied in the 2014 Daily Record ruling

PCC held the paper breached Clause 1 (accuracy) by publishing an altered photo without telling readers; it said readers should have been told at the time.

Code has no rule on dated records; a dated original would be useful evidence but no rule names it. Note the PCC has since been replaced by IPSO.

      Proves / Doesn’t prove

      Proves

A completed time receipt shows that the exact selected file existed by the independently witnessed time. You can check whether a later copy has the same bytes. It does not establish creation time, authorship, identity, event order, location or the truth of the contents.

      Doesn’t prove

It does not prove who took the photo, where or when it was actually shot, that the file is unedited straight from the camera, or that what it shows is true.

This cannot establish that a file came straight from the camera, who took it, when it was captured or whether the scene is true.

These are the bounds of a completed proof. The local tester does not establish any time. The chosen court, scheme or regulator decides what to accept.

      Questions, answered plainly.

It doesn't send the plain fingerprint or the random value that opens the code. Keep the original file and the complete receipt for checking. Privacy Policy.

Which file should I receipt: RAW or JPEG?

The first-generation file from the camera or phone, before any app, crop or export. Press contests ask for the file as recorded by the camera, plus neighbouring frames.

Why not just use the photo's date in its metadata?

Metadata can be edited or stripped, and a camera clock can be wrong. A receipt is dated by an outside timestamp authority.

      Context for this answer
If I resize or compress a photo, does the receipt still match?

No. Any change to the bytes changes the fingerprint, so a receipt matches only the exact file. Receipt each version you need to prove.

Will a court accept the receipt?

Courts and other bodies decide that. In US federal courts, hash-matched copies can be authenticated under Rule 902(14) with a qualified person's certification, but weight and admissibility are for the judge.

What if a news outlet or contest asks for my original?

Send the camera-recorded file they ask for. The receipt helps show that file is the same one that existed on the receipt date.
