Now keep it safe: three things
  1. Keep your photos and files unedited. The receipt only matches the originals. Put them in an album such as “My records”.
  2. Save this receipt to your camera roll.

Keep the receipt file too. The image is a handy copy; checking needs the file.

  3. Email it to yourself.Email it to myself

Your mail app opens a draft. Attach your receipt image and receipt file. Don’t attach your photos or documents. Timevolt does not send it or know whether it was sent.

How to keep notes that hold up

Write notes as soon as you can. Keep the original account rather than replacing it later; the venue decides what weight it gets.

      1. Write it down straight away, on paper or in the box on a step.
      2. Put the date, time and place at the top, and who you spoke to.
      3. Use their words where you can; separate what you saw from what you were told.
      4. Sign or initial a paper note, photograph it and add the photo.
      5. Never edit an old note. Add a new dated entry when something changes. A device save time is not independent time evidence or proof of event order.

      02 · Date the file’s code

Your device fingerprints the selected file or manifest. Dated follows an independent timestamp; Permanent follows Bitcoin anchoring.

      03 · Keep the evidence

Retain the carrier paperwork and the claim acknowledgment. A file date supplements the original hand-off evidence.

Keep the originals too. A changed or compressed copy has a different fingerprint.

      Scope of the cited rule.

For claims covered by 49 USC 14706(e), a carrier cannot allow less than nine months to file a claim or less than two years to bring suit. The suit period runs from written notice disallowing any part of the claim. Check the actual terms and applicable scope.

Damage photos may not show what caused it

A shipper showed photos of damaged tanks and sought to win without a trial. The carrier blamed packing and forklift handling. The judge found a real dispute about fault and set a trial.

      49 CFR 370.3(b)-(c)

A claim must be a written communication identifying the shipment, asserting liability and requesting a specific or determinable sum; bad order reports, damage notations and inspection reports alone are not enough. The claim must satisfy the required content and filing rules. Check the carrier’s accepted submission method and keep proof of submission. Proves / Doesn’t prove

      Proves

A completed time receipt shows that the exact selected file existed by the independently witnessed time. You can check whether a later copy has the same bytes. It does not establish creation time, authorship, identity, event order, location or the truth of the contents.

      Doesn’t prove

It does not prove who took the photos, where, that the damage or shortage was caused in transit, that the carrier agreed, or who wins a freight claim.

A receipt cannot establish damage in transit, carrier agreement, location or liability.

These are the bounds of a completed proof. The local tester does not establish any time. The chosen court, scheme or regulator decides what to accept.

What photos should I take when pallets arrive damaged?

Take a wide shot of the pallet with the seal and pro number visible, close-ups of each damaged spot with something for scale, the label and carton count, and the delivery receipt with your written exception. Describe what you see without guessing the cause.

Do I have to write the damage on the delivery receipt before the driver leaves?

Yes, that is the standard advice. Write specific exceptions (pallet, piece count, what is damaged) on the delivery receipt before signing; vague notes like subject to inspection are weak.

What if I signed clean and found damage later?

That is concealed damage. Notice windows are short and set by the carrier terms (sources cite roughly 3 to 15 days), so tell the carrier in writing right away and check your bill of lading.

How long do I have to file a freight claim?

For claims within 49 U.S.C. §14706, a carrier may not allow less than nine months to file a claim or less than two years to bring suit. The suit period runs from the carrier’s written notice disallowing any part of the claim. Check the applicable terms and get advice about your deadline.

      Context for this answer
Are photos alone a freight claim?

No. A written claim must identify the shipment, assert carrier liability and ask for a specific or determinable sum. Damage notations and inspection reports alone are not treated as sufficient.

      Context for this answer
What does a shipper have to show in a damage case?

Courts describe three things: the goods were in good condition when handed over, they arrived damaged, and the amount of the loss. The burden then shifts to the carrier.

Will a court accept a hash of a file as authentic?

Federal Rule 902(14) lets certified data copied from a file be authenticated by digital identification, and the committee note names hash values. A court still decides how much weight to give it.
