Now keep it safe: three things
  1. Keep your photos and files unedited. The receipt only matches the originals. Put them in an album such as “My records”.
  2. Save this receipt to your camera roll.

Keep the receipt file too. The image is a handy copy; checking needs the file.

  3. Email it to yourself.Email it to myself

Your mail app opens a draft. Attach your receipt image and receipt file. Don’t attach your photos or documents. Timevolt does not send it or know whether it was sent.

How?

Add the exact original files for this part of the record. Keep them unchanged; a different export or edit has a different fingerprint.

How to keep notes that hold up

Write notes as soon as you can. Keep the original account rather than replacing it later; the venue decides what weight it gets.

      1. Write it down straight away, on paper or in the box on a step.
      2. Put the date, time and place at the top, and who you spoke to.
      3. Use their words where you can; separate what you saw from what you were told.
      4. Sign or initial a paper note, photograph it and add the photo.
      5. Never edit an old note. Add a new dated entry when something changes. A device save time is not independent time evidence or proof of event order.

FRE 902(14): data copied from a device or file is self-authenticating if authenticated by a process of digital identification, certified by a qualified person. 2017 Committee Note: identical hash values reliably attest that original and copy are exact duplicates.

Supports the hash-matching half (these bytes are those bytes). It speaks to authenticity of copies, not to the date; a dated receipt is supporting evidence a party may offer with a certification. Admissibility stays with the court.

      EU AI Act Article 50

Providers of AI systems generating synthetic image, audio, video or text must mark outputs in a machine-readable, detectable format; deployers must disclose deepfakes. Applies from 2 August 2026.

Requires marking and disclosure but says nothing about independent timestamps. A time receipt is not a marking and should not be sold as compliance.

      Proves / Doesn’t prove

      Proves

A completed time receipt shows that the exact selected file existed by the independently witnessed time. You can check whether a later copy has the same bytes. It does not establish creation time, authorship, identity, event order, location or the truth of the contents.

      Doesn’t prove

It does not prove who made or signed the asset, that the C2PA manifest is valid or its signer trusted, where it was captured, that the content is true, or how a court or platform will rule.

This is not an authenticity verdict. It cannot establish a trusted signer, a valid manifest, authorship, capture location or truthful content.

These are the bounds of a completed proof. The local tester does not establish any time. The chosen court, scheme or regulator decides what to accept.

      Questions, answered plainly.

Your file stays on your device. During normal receipt creation, your device sends a randomized code made from its fingerprint, plus encrypted recovery data. It doesn't send the plain fingerprint or the random value that opens the code. Keep the original file and the complete receipt for checking. Privacy Policy.

What happens to a C2PA manifest when the signing certificate expires?

Per the C2PA spec, a manifest without a trusted time-stamp stops being valid when the signing credential expires or is revoked. With a trusted RFC 3161 time-stamp it can keep validating.

      Doesn't C2PA already include timestamps?

It allows and encourages them, but the signer has to add one. If your tool did not, or you want a record of the final published file, a separate time receipt dates the bytes independently.

Does a time receipt satisfy EU AI Act Article 50?

No. Article 50 requires machine-readable marking of AI-generated content and disclosure of deepfakes. A time receipt only dates a file; it is not a marking or a disclosure.

If I re-export or compress the image, does the receipt still match?

No. Any change to a single byte changes the fingerprint, so get a receipt for each final file you publish, and keep the original.

Will a court accept the receipt?

Courts decide what evidence they accept. In US federal court, hash values are recognized for showing a copy is identical (FRE 902(14) note), and a date from an independent authority can support your account, but it does not prove authorship.
