Now keep it safe: three things
  1. Keep your photos and files unedited. The receipt only matches the originals. Put them in an album such as “My records”.
  2. Save this receipt to your camera roll.

Keep the receipt file too. The image is a handy copy; checking needs the file.

  3. Email it to yourself.Email it to myself

Your mail app opens a draft. Attach your receipt image and receipt file. Don’t attach your photos or documents. Timevolt does not send it or know whether it was sent.

How to keep notes that hold up

Write notes as soon as you can. Keep the original account rather than replacing it later; the venue decides what weight it gets.

          1. Write it down straight away, on paper or in the box on a step.
          2. Put the date, time and place at the top, and who you spoke to.
          3. Use their words where you can; separate what you saw from what you were told.
          4. Sign or initial a paper note, photograph it and add the photo.
          5. Never edit an old note. Add a new dated entry when something changes. A device save time is not independent time evidence or proof of event order.

Keep the handover and response records

A client said delivered software did not meet the deal. The court weighed the handover and lack of a required written response, then treated the part-built product as accepted. It dismissed the claim.

Company software dispute; the court applied this contract’s specific handover terms.

Put the final handover in writing

A tenant said a joint check should have led to the deposit being returned. No written record showed a final handover. The court allowed a later check under the contract and rejected the claim for the deposit.

Long-term tenancy; the court also relied on this contract’s repair and upkeep duties. No general rule about all deposits.

          Federal courts (not small claims)

Federal Rule of Evidence 902(14): self-authentication of data copied from an electronic device, storage medium, or file, by a process of digital identification (the Committee Note names hash value), with a qualified person's certification and notice under 902(11). Rule 902(13) separately covers records generated by an electronic process or system, also by certification, without mentioning hash values.

The Committee Notes say identical hash values reliably show the original and the copy are exact duplicates. This is the closest primary rule to what a time receipt does. It applies to federal courts, not to small claims courts, which usually relax evidence rules. It still needs a certifying person.

          Proves / Doesn’t prove

          Proves

A completed time receipt shows that the exact selected file existed by the independently witnessed time. You can check whether a later copy has the same bytes. It does not establish creation time, authorship, identity, event order, location or the truth of the contents.

          Doesn’t prove

It does not prove who made or sent a file, where or when a photo was really taken, that a message came from the other party, that the content is true, or that a court will accept it.

A receipt does not establish identity, message authorship, truth, service or admissibility.

These are the bounds of a completed proof. The local tester does not establish any time. The chosen court, scheme or regulator decides what to accept.

          Questions, answered plainly.

Your file stays on your device. During normal receipt creation, your device sends a randomized code made from its fingerprint, plus encrypted recovery data. It doesn't send the plain fingerprint or the random value that opens the code. Keep the original file and the complete receipt for checking. Privacy Policy.

Can I use text message screenshots in small claims court?

Often yes, but separate evidence may be needed to connect the messages to a person. Keep the complete thread, dates, contact details and the source device. A receipt lets you check whether the selected file matches the bytes dated earlier.

Who can vouch for a screenshot in court?

In New York's high court, a person with personal knowledge of the conversation could authenticate screenshots they did not take. Other courts are stricter, and small claims judges often have wide latitude.

Do I file my evidence before the hearing?

Will a judge accept a time receipt?

Each court decides. Federal rules treat matching hash values as reliable proof that a copy is identical, but small claims courts set their own practice. Treat the receipt as supporting evidence, not a guarantee.
