Now keep it safe: three things
  1. Keep your photos and files unedited. The receipt only matches the originals. Put them in an album such as “My records”.
  2. Save this receipt to your camera roll.

Keep the receipt file too. The image is a handy copy; checking needs the file.

  3. Email it to yourself.Email it to myself

Your mail app opens a draft. Attach your receipt image and receipt file. Don’t attach your photos or documents. Timevolt does not send it or know whether it was sent.

Your record, one step at a time.

How to keep notes that hold up

Write notes as soon as you can. Keep the original account rather than replacing it later; the venue decides what weight it gets.

      1. Write it down straight away, on paper or in the box on a step.
      2. Put the date, time and place at the top, and who you spoke to.
      3. Use their words where you can; separate what you saw from what you were told.
      4. Sign or initial a paper note, photograph it and add the photo.
      5. Never edit an old note. Add a new dated entry when something changes. A device save time is not independent time evidence or proof of event order.

      03 · Keep the evidence

Keep the source history and license records separately. A dated artifact does not document unrecorded history.

Code made during leave can raise ownership questions

A worker said he built rival software while on unpaid leave. The employer said it owned the code under their work deal. The court refused the employer's bid to win without trial; ownership was not finally settled.

Save code before shared access ends

A programmer and a firm fought over who owned source files. Files were said to have been removed, and the firm did not spot lost access until later. The court kept a temporary order for the firm, not a final ownership ruling.

      Federal Rules of Evidence 902(14)

Data copied from a file is self-authenticating if authenticated by a process of digital identification, with a qualified person's certification; the 2017 committee note says identical hash values reliably attest that original and copy are exact duplicates.

Supports using a SHA-256 match to show a file is the same as the one stamped. It addresses identity of the file, not the date by itself; the date rests on the timestamp authority's evidence, and a certification and notice are still required.

      Federal Rules of Evidence 902(13)

A record generated by an electronic process or system that produces an accurate result is self-authenticating with a qualified person's certification.

Could cover a timestamp authority's output if someone can certify the system is accurate; whether a court takes a given receipt this way is up to the court.

      RFC 3161 (Time-Stamp Protocol)

A TSA's role is to establish evidence that a datum existed before a particular time; it works on a hash only and does not identify the requester.

Defines exactly what a TSA token shows and what it leaves out; it is a technical standard, not a legal rule. Certificate status must be checked separately.

      17 U.S.C. 410(c)

A registration certificate made before or within five years after first publication is prima facie evidence of the validity of the copyright and the facts in the certificate; later, weight is at the court's discretion.

For copyright claims in the US, registration is the route the statute rewards. A time receipt is separate supporting evidence, not a substitute.

      Proves / Doesn’t prove

      Proves

A completed time receipt shows that the exact selected file existed by the independently witnessed time. You can check whether a later copy has the same bytes. It does not establish creation time, authorship, identity, event order, location or the truth of the contents.

      Doesn’t prove

It does not prove who wrote the code, that you own it or that it is original, what the license is, or who wins a dispute; a receipt for a hash also says nothing about unreleased history unless you stamped it.

This cannot establish authorship, ownership, originality, license rights or a dispute outcome.

These are the bounds of a completed proof. The local tester does not establish any time. The chosen court, scheme or regulator decides what to accept.

      Questions, answered plainly.

Your file stays on your device. During normal receipt creation, your device sends a randomized code made from its fingerprint, plus encrypted recovery data. It doesn't send the plain fingerprint or the random value that opens the code. Keep the original file and the complete receipt for checking. Privacy Policy.

Can I fake or change a git commit date?

Yes. Git lets the committer set the author and committer dates with a flag or environment variables, so a commit date alone is a claim, not proof. A date from an outside timestamp authority is not set by you.

Does a signed commit prove when I wrote the code?

No. A signature shows the change came from the holder of a key. GitHub's own docs describe the Verified badge's timestamp as when verification completed, not when the commit was made.

What should I stamp: a commit, a tag or a release file?

Stamp what you ship: the release archive or build artifact, plus a text file listing the commit ID (and tree) it came from. A commit ID is itself a hash of its contents, so stamping it also pins the history behind it. Stamp each release, because a receipt covers only what was stamped.

Is a time receipt the same as copyright registration?

No. Registration with the US Copyright Office costs $45 to $65 online and creates an official record with legal presumptions in some cases. A time receipt is a quick, cheap dated record of exact files; use it as supporting evidence, not a replacement.

Will a court accept a time receipt?

That is up to the court. In US federal courts a hash comparison can help authenticate that a file is identical to the one stamped (Rule 902(14)), but weight and admissibility are decided case by case.

What is the difference between this and OpenTimestamps or FreeTSA?

Both are free and legitimate. OpenTimestamps anchors in Bitcoin; FreeTSA gives you RFC 3161 tokens through openssl. A time receipt combines an independent TSA date with a Bitcoin anchor, then packages the proof and a printable receipt so you do not manage .tsr or .ots files yourself.
